THE AMERICAN BOTTOM 45 OF THE DAY - THE GLASS BOTTLE - SORRY SUZANNE

THE AMERICAN BOTTOM 45 OF THE DAY - The Glass Bottle - Sorry Suzanne - Peaked At 130 In Cashbox Magazine On 7/25/70.

Recently I had an hour to kill, so I decided to watch an original broadcast of "The 5th Dimension Special" from May 1970 on CBS. It featured cuts from their newly released "Portrait" album as well as some earlier hits; there were also appearances from Glen Campbell, Flip Wilson, Tiny Tim, Arte Johnson, and the absolutely stunning Joey Heatherton('72 hit "Gone," a Retro Attic staple).

The commercials focused solely on The Glass Container Manufacturers Institute, Inc., and that's where today's featured group comes into the picture. Two of the commercials featured this group performing while the audience consumed soft drinks out of glass bottles. I guess the idea was to stress that soda belonged in glass bottles since glass could be grinded down afterwards and returned to the earth's surface.

The Glass Bottle were a 4 man, 2 woman group who looked like a pop version of Sly And The Family Stone. Their drummer rocked the 'fro as well as Grand Funk's Don Brewer did! This 45 was one of their first releases and yes, it is the same tune that The Hollies had a mid-charter with in '69(as a result, The Hollies' version will be retired from the rotation for a while). Some of you may remember their top 40 hit from the summer of '71, a woeful pop tune called "I Ain't Got Time Anymore." It has been a Retro Attic standard since Day 1, and I could always picture David Cassidy singing it.

Come to our website at http://retroatticrareoldiesradio.com and hear The Glass Bottle anytime! I highly recommend checking out that 5th Dimension special; I'll leave it up to you to decide if you want to enjoy it with Miller Beer and a pack of Viceroy cigarettes.

THE AMERICAN BOTTOM 45 OF THE DAY - FIREFALL - GOODBYE I LOVE YOU

THE AMERICAN BOTTOM 45 OF THE DAY - Firefall - Goodbye I Love You - Atlantic 3544 - Peaked at 43 in Billboard on 3/3/79, but it did sneak in at 40 for one week in Cashbox that same month.

During the late 70's, the only two radio stations that were on in my household were ones out of Lebanon, NH and Claremont, NH. Their focus? Adult contemporary. As a matter of fact, my old stomping grounds was like that town in the Footloose movie; instead of outlawing dancing, mine outlawed hard rock! So I became very familiar with Barry Manilow, Ambrosia, LeBlanc And Carr, England Dan And John Ford Coley, Seals And Crofts, Linda Ronstadt, Eric Carmen...you get the idea. Years later, I can now look back at those days and say "I miss those stations." As you know, The Retro Attic keeps trying to bring back those missing sounds.

Another band that got played frequently on those stations was Firefall, a Colorado band that scored 6 top 40 hits and is still touring with a couple of the original members; check them out at Firefall's Website. Everyone best remembers them for "You Are The Woman," "Strange Way" and "Just Remember I Love You." If you know today's featured single, then I think you will agree that there are occasions(the acoustic guitar especially) when it sounds very similar to "Just Remember I Love You." That probably explains why it fell just short of the 40; the "If it ain't broke, don't fix it" concept didn't always guarantee huge follow-up success(think of Edward Bear and The Soul Survivors).

You can hear this great lost Firefall platter and many other seldom heard soft rock numbers from the late 70's(Mesa, Euclid Beach Band, Boatz, etc.) by accessing the player on The Retro Attic's webpage. Thanks for your continued support!

THE AMERICAN BOTTOM 45 OF THE DAY - GLADSTONE - A PIECE OF PAPER

THE AMERICAN BOTTOM 45 OF THE DAY: Gladstone - A Piece Of Paper - ABC 11327 - Peaked at 45 in Billboard on 10/21/1972, but it did do a little bit better in Cashbox during the same month(#38).

This is a feature I'm going to start doing on a more regular basis, especially considering that The Retro Attic's reputation was primarily built on showcasing records that never charted or never reached the Billboard Top 40. I'm going to include pictures only; I want you to tune in and hear it or even request it!

Gladstone were a short-lived Texas group with folk and rustic sounds and great harmonies. This was their only visit to the Hot 100 and is a great blend of acoustic guitars, tag line harmonies, and a powerful message. If you are a fan of CSN, America, Three Dog Night and 70's singer/songwriters such as Cat Stevens and James Taylor, then you will dig this record!

Back in those days, we weren't afraid to say what we thought about what was going on in the world. We were proactive...we came up with solutions...we worked together. We were smart enough to know that our decisions could be reasonable without a piece of paper telling us what to do. And sometimes those pieces of paper were beyond logical! That's what you will get out of this song.

The most famous member of this group was Mike Rabon, who was the frontman for The Five Americans; you may remember their '66-'67 hits such as "Western Union," "I See The Light" and "Sound Of Love." 1 member was with the fairly well-known Texas garage band Mouse And The Traps, who scored a bubbling under single in 1968. 2 members would later go on to do background vocals on a few of the late 70's and early 80's Neil Diamond albums.

Gladstone also had another single that was written by Mike Settle, who you may know from The New Christy Minstrels, Kenny Rogers And The First Edition, and the bubblegum ensemble The Sugar Bears. This should tip you off further about Gladstone's overall sound.

The bottom 45's live once again on The Retro Attic! Come and hear them every hour at http://retroatticrareoldiesradio.com.
