DJ Gilbert Matthews welcomes you to The Retro Attic, a 24/7 internet radio station that primarily plays those classic and seldom heard top 40 entries from the 60's and 70's, along with a sprinkling of late 50's and early 80's hits that also fit the format. Hopefully our wide variety of oldies will be mind-blowing musical history lessons for you! A couple of "Bottom 45's" from each decade will be included every hour; these are defined as minor charters(peaked between 41 and 100), Bubbling Under/Looking Ahead entries(peaked between 101 and 150), non-charters, or tunes that were only hits in Canada, the UK, or Australia. A track from our "Featured Artist Of The Month" will also be heard every 2 hours(beginning in November 2017). Sit back, have fun, and take yourself back to simpler times(when people smiled at each other and didn't question why, kids played outside all day, and parents never worried)! You can also find us on Shoutcast, Virtual Radio, Nobex Radio, Delicast, Streamfinder, Tunein.com(highly recommended for those of you who use mobile apps), and ITunes Radio in their "Golden Oldies" category. Feel free to chat with me, DJ Gilbert Matthews, through our live chat widget in the bottom right corner of our webpage. HAPPY LISTENING! WE'RE MOVING FORWARD IN 2016, BUT PLEASE CONTINUE TO SUPPORT US!

The Retro Attic and Awfully Awesome Eighties will NOT be going dark on December 31st. Our licensing fees for 2016 went up some, but they're still doable. There are a lot of bigger internet radio stations out there that will be pulling the plug(more listener hours, more revenue, and more expenses mean very high licensing fees), so it's hard to say what kind of effect it will eventually have on our total listener hours for each month. Some listeners will migrate to Pandora, Spotify, SiriusXM, etc.; the rest of the audience will continue to look for stations that dig deep for their playlists.

The Retro Attic's Featured Artist Of The Month for January will be The Guess Who; this will also include selected cuts from BTO, Ironhorse and Burton Cummings.

Donations to the stations will continue to be strongly encouraged as some aspects of the monthly licensing fees are still being negotiated(for example, ASCAP may or may not allow multiple stations on a licensing account) and our playlists will really start expanding now. Being a VIP member gives you more programming capabilities! Visit us at either http://retroatticrareoldiesradio.com or http://awfullyawesomeeighties.com and look for our Paypal donation buttons; both webpages also have links to our Facebook groups.

Thanks for your support and we look forward to bringing you more great listening in 2016! Have a Happy New Year!

Glad to hear you will still be on 24/7, I had just finished reading your earlier post when you posted the update. I don't get a chance to listen as often as I'd like but appreciate the endless hours and hard work it takes to keep it going.
I also have to tip my cap to your artist of the month in January. Have always been a big Guess Who fan, and even bigger Burton Cummings fan. I'd be hard pressed to name a male vocalist I'd rather listen to, I don't know if you are including music outside the 50s through 80's, but his 2008 record "Above The Ground" includes two of his best songs IMHO - "A Touch Of Morning" and "Any Minor Miracle".

The top songs above look like they are right out of my favorites on my iTunes. Glass Bottle, Liz Damon & The Orient Express, Giorgio, Ashton, Gardner & Dyke, Ray Stevens, John Phillips, and on and on.... Songs you never hear on oldies stations anymore. Thanks again for all you do!

    1. Hi Dana...I don't know how much longer I will be able to continue, but at least I'm okay for January. The question is...will I get slapped with a big invoice in February? If so, then I will either have to migrate over to Radionomy or do podcasting. Even Live365 is THISCLOSE to shutting its doors! The licensing fees I'm being charged right now are on an interim basis; if last-minute negotiations with Soundexchange go south, then fees would get readjusted(retroactive to January 1st). I'm taking enough of a risk right now as it is.

  2. I will be watching closely to see what happens. How much of a listener base do you have?

  3. On average, 10-20 on the weekdays. That could go up once people start realizing that there is a sudden shortage of internet oldies stations. Even with only 15 listeners and around 15 songs playing every hour, Soundexchange's "per performance, per listener" fee alone would add up to around 3 grand a year. There are also fees for ASCAP, BMI, SESAC and SOCAN. ASCAP no longer allows multiple streams on one licensing account, so I had to pull the plug on the 24/7 80's stream.

    1. Selfishly, If you had to choose one, I'm glad Retro Attic stayed, but that accomplishes what they are trying to do, drive out the small internet stations. I'll sure you have followers who will miss that station as well, my wife would be among them. It will be "interesting" to see how many of the internet only stations survive, i have a friend who djs a heavy metal show weekly for a station, I'll have to check and see how they are affected. Meanwhile, carry on!
